A genuinely accurate ranking formula can grow enormously complex, weighing dozens of separate factors and edge cases, yet an overly complex formula becomes genuinely difficult for ordinary readers to understand or meaningfully trust without considerable outside explanation and support. That growing complexity can quickly outpace what an ordinary, casual reader can reasonably be expected to follow.
Compilers constantly balance this tension, favouring a formula complex enough to capture genuine nuance while remaining simple enough that a typical reader can grasp the basic logic without needing a dedicated technical background or specialist statistical training to follow along. Favouring simplicity too heavily, meanwhile, risks flattening genuinely important nuance the formula was meant to capture.
Getting that balance right is as much an editorial and communication judgement as it is a purely mathematical one, since a ranking nobody actually understands provides little genuine practical value however statistically sophisticated it might technically be underneath. This balancing act repeats itself every time a chart's underlying methodology is seriously reconsidered or revised.
