A composite score exists because no single metric ever tells the whole story about popularity on its own, so compilers blend several measurements together, such as sales, streams and airplay, into one combined figure that can be ranked directly against every other entry. That blended figure is meant to represent overall demand more completely than any single input possibly could alone.
Building that blend requires converting each separate metric onto a shared, comparable scale before they can be meaningfully combined at all, since raw stream counts and raw sales counts do not naturally sit on the same footing without some deliberate adjustment applied first by the compiler. That conversion step is rarely visible to the public, yet it shapes the final blend considerably.
Once combined, a composite score can obscure exactly which underlying metric actually drove a particular result, which is why the most transparent charts publish each component figure alongside the final blended total. That extra detail lets a genuinely curious reader see precisely how a given position was actually reached.
