Not every stream carries exactly the same weight in a compiler's carefully considered eyes. A play from a paying subscriber typically counts more heavily toward a chart position than one from a free, ad supported account, reflecting the genuinely different commercial value that sits quietly behind each individual listen, a difference rarely visible to the average listener despite how much it shapes the final tally.

The reasoning behind this is fairly straightforward once explained: subscription revenue is steadier and more directly attributable per individual play, while ad supported listening depends instead on variable advertising income that fluctuates independently of any single song's popularity in a given week. Compilers periodically revisit this weighting as both markets continue to mature.

This tiered counting system means two identical play counts can end up contributing very differently to a final chart position, depending entirely on which kind of account actually generated them, a distinction most casual chart readers never notice but that genuinely shapes the outcome regardless of that fact.
